Roughly speaking, cabinetry is the largest single line item in most kitchen budgets, often approaching a third of the total. Countertops are usually next. Appliances, labor, flooring, lighting, plumbing, and electrical divide the rest.

The practical implication: your cabinet decision drives your budget more than anything else you'll choose. Stock, semi-custom, and full custom cabinetry are dramatically different numbers for a visually similar result.

What makes it expensive

Moving plumbing and electrical is the biggest avoidable cost. Keeping the sink and appliances roughly where they are saves real money, and in a lot of kitchens the existing locations are fine.

Removing a load-bearing wall adds engineering and a beam, but it's also frequently the change that most transforms an older Utah County home. Worth the money when the wall is the actual problem.

Older homes often need electrical brought current — dedicated appliance circuits and GFCI protection. Budget for it in 1970s and 80s homes rather than being surprised.

Where to save, where not to

Reasonable places to economize: quartz over exotic natural stone, semi-custom rather than full custom cabinetry, keeping the existing layout, and stock lighting instead of designer fixtures.

Places not to: cabinet hardware quality, which you touch every day; the range if you actually cook; plumbing fixtures, where cheap ones fail; and labor. Choosing a contractor because they were the cheapest bid is how kitchens end up with doors that don't align and counters with visible seams.

Cabinet painting as an alternative

If your cabinet boxes are structurally sound and the layout works, painting cabinets and replacing countertops can transform a kitchen for a small fraction of a full remodel.

It isn't the right answer for everyone — it doesn't fix a bad layout or failing boxes. But when the bones are good, it's the highest-return kitchen project available.
