Basement flooring is its own problem
Concrete slabs release moisture vapor, and the wrong flooring over an untreated slab will cup, delaminate, or grow mold. This is the most common flooring mistake we see in finished basements.
Luxury vinyl plank is generally the best answer for basements — waterproof, comfortable, and dimensionally stable over concrete. Tile works well too. Solid hardwood over a slab is a bad idea regardless of what anyone tells you.
Where moisture is a question, we test the slab before choosing a system rather than after.
Subfloor prep
Most flooring problems are subfloor problems. Slabs are rarely flat, and rigid materials like tile and LVP telegraph every dip and hump — as hollow spots, cracked grout, or separating seams.
We check flatness and level it where needed. It adds cost. It also prevents the failure.

Frequently asked questions
- What flooring is best for a basement?
- Luxury vinyl plank for most people — it's waterproof, dimensionally stable over concrete, warmer underfoot than tile, and forgiving of the minor moisture that slabs naturally release. Tile is also excellent. Avoid solid hardwood below grade; it will move with slab moisture no matter how carefully it's installed.
- Do I need to level my concrete before flooring?
- Often, yes. Slabs are rarely flat, and rigid materials telegraph every dip — showing up as hollow spots underfoot, cracked grout, or separating seams. We check flatness and level where needed. It's an added cost that prevents a much larger one.
- Can you install over my existing floor?
- Sometimes, depending on what's there and what's going over it. It saves removal cost but raises floor height, which affects door clearances and transitions. We'll tell you whether it's a good idea in your specific case rather than defaulting to whichever is easier.
